Service
Service to our Community
Young people need to serve. The level of community service is a good indication of the health of any society. Scouting has, from its inception, been deeply rooted in the concept of doing for others. "Do a Good Turn Daily" is a core Scouting precept. Scouting encourages young people to recognize the needs of others and take action accordingly. Scouting works through neighborhoods, volunteer organizations, and faith-based organizations to help young people appreciate and respond to the needs of others.
Pack 1 Richmond is deeply committed to community service. Each year, our Scouts and their families kindly donate hundreds of hours of time to support many great causes like the following and many more.
Collecting food donations for New Hope Chapel's Pantry during annual Scouting for Food campaign
Cleaning up litter at Misquamicut Beach as part of the annual International Coastal Cleanup
Placing flags at the Rhode Island Veteran's Cemetery on Memorial Day weekend
Washing fire trucks for the Richmond Carolina Fire Association before the Memorial Day Parade
Respectfully retiring unserviceable American flags with Downey Weaver VFW on Flag Day
Hosting an annual Bike Safety Rodeo to teach safe riding skills before summer vacation
Carrying the colors for Disabled American Veterans Post 6 in the Veteran's Day Parade
Staffing field games for youth attending Swamp Yankee Days
While various activities and youth groups teach basic skills and promote teamwork, Scouting goes beyond that and encourages youth to achieve a deeper appreciation for service to others in their community.
